System Cables

Cables are a vital part of any sound or AV system.  They are not an accessory, their effect is easy to hear and though their contribution should not be overstated, it can certainly not be ignored.  While “any old wire” will electrically connect pieces of equipment, the amount of information lost and noise accumulated through inferior cables is huge and once altered, the original signal cannot be recovered.  We at Aeolian spend a great deal of time and effort testing cables in various systems so that we can offer very high performance products which still offer good value.  There are as yet no conclusive tests which can show why one cable is better than another, nor are there definitive guidelines as to which cables to use with particular pieces of equipment - that is why there are so many different styles and types vying for market share.  You have to use your ears, and your experience to find the best cable for you and your system.  We therefore suggest that once you have assembled a well-balanced and synergistic system, you test different cables in you system to attain the best match - this should provide you with the most information while not accentuating any part of the frequency range.

Some cables (including some of the most expensive!) sound very full and smooth, but this is because they roll off the frequency extremes (particularly the high frequencies), thereby causing an unnatural frequency balance.  The best cables sound open, detailed and extended, with sparkling, fast treble and good bass control, but they do not sound bright, constricted or overly rich.  If you have spent too much previously on a cable, do not try to build your system around the cable.  If it does not suit your present system, sell it and find a cable that does.  On average, cables (power, interconnect and speaker cables) should constitute 10 - 20% of the system budget - spend less than this and you will definitely be losing information, spend much more and you are misallocating funds.

Aeolian Cables

Aeolian AC Cables

Power cables are seriously underrated in their effect on the overall system.  Aeolian power cables will have more positive effect on a good system than most interconnects and speaker cables costing several multiple of their price.  However contentious this may sound, it is true and easy to discern.  Try an Aeolian power cable in your system and you will be amazed at the improvement.

Silver Slipper

Silver Slipper is our reference AC Cable, and is 10A rated, with Neutrik PowerCon plug and Gold-plated OCC IEC 320 plug.  Conductors are made up of multiple strands of very high grade pure silver, insulated with pure Teflon, giving a conductor total cross-sectional area of 4.5 mm2.  The Cable is triple screened for maximum EMI/RFI rejection.

Aeolian Digital Cables

Aeolian has released the Aeolian range of digital audio cables, comprising AES/EBU 110Ω balanced cables with XLR connectors and 75Ω coaxial cables with either BNC or RCA connectors.

Utilizing top quality components and carefully hand-assembled, these cables offer genuine impedance matching and outstanding performance at incredibly low prices.

Other Brands

Aeolian supplies digital and analogue interconnects and speaker cables from several impeccable sources, eg. Apogee, Burmester, Esoteric Mexcel, Nordost, Viola Audio Laboratories.

Methods For Handling Cables

Cables are delicate scientifically designed products. For optimum performance:

Do not wind, bundle, stretch or tightly bend
Do not place the audio cable in parallel with a power cable
Do not place the audio cable in parallel with ferrous constructions
Do not leave one end of any cable open, and do not allow positive and negative paths to short circuit
Disconnect unnecessary cables
Do not try to affect a join in cables
Periodically clean any oxidation from contacts
Do not use in unnecessarily long lengths
